We offer training for complete beginners to introduce the skill of hedge laying.
Please note, our Hedge Laying & Tool Sharpening courses are full for the 2023 / 2024 season.
This is a perfect introduction to traditional hedgelaying and is suitable for those seeking to add to woodland management or landscape gardening skills, and a great present for garden lovers and rural skill enthusiasts. Learn about local methods and traditions of hedgelaying, traditional hand tools, natural history of hedgerows whilst receiving hands on experience of laying an actual hedge within the beautiful countryside.
Our training courses run at various venues in Kent, East Sussex, West Sussex, and Surrey (and occasionally in Hampshire) we try to hold most events within about 1hour drive of Lewes, but availability of suitable hedges does mean we have to venture further afield.
Traditional hedgelaying provides dense cover at ground level for livestock and wildlife, consolidating the network of fruiting ‘green corridors’ linking other habitats. Normally, hedge laying can be conducted between October and early March whilst the hedging plants are dormant.
Please note:
Hedgelaying is not suitable for anybody unable to move around easily on rough ground. You will remain in the open air throughout the day and participants should dress warmly and bring waterproofs and strong footwear.
Training for Hedge Laying is £150 for 4 sessions, or £60 for one session, payable in advance. More details are included in the attached form. Coppicing days are free to all Members.
Already Trained?
Each season there will be cants set aside for members who are trained cutters and wish to lay without a trainer to gain experience, this is on a first come first served basis, is FREE, and must be pre-booked
New to the society and want to cut?
Great news, however in order to ensure the quality of work meets our high standards your first session will be assessed by our chief trainer and this will incur a small fee.
If you wish to attend a training day you must book in advance of the event.
